CTL021- UAS/DRONE TECHNOLOGY– 1.0 LU Credit Available

Matthew Aldridge, certified Remote Pilot/UAS (Unmanned Aerial Systems)  and Drone Department Head with CTL Enginnering, will be highlighting all of the benefits of UAS/Drone Technology as well as technical capabilities, safe operations and best practices. You will understand what a UAS is, its technical capabilities and function. The applications are limitless and a few of the features/benefits are aerial photography, Topographic mapping, DTM (Digital Terrain Model), DEM (Digital Elevation Model) and DSM (Digital Surface Model) modeling, 3D Point Cloud modeling, progress photos, facility assessments, and inspection of infrastructure, parking lots, terrain, etc. The presentation will cover FAA regulations, accuracy, camera detail, inspecting inaccessible or hazardous areas, flight characteristics and limitations.

Learning Objectives:

  • Safe and responsible UAS operations.  This course will illustrate the value which safe UAS operations can provide
  • Technical capabilities of the UAS, its flight characteristics, limitations, etc.
  • Applications within various industries, all of the uses and limitations to add efficiency and reduce costs
  • Knowledge of FAA regulations

BIO: Mat Aldridge has been with CTL Engineering for almost two years in the role of Environmental Scientist. He also now heads up the Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) department which has become a great tool supporting all of our services. He has a BS in Biology from West Virginia University and is currently finishing his MS with a focus in environmental science and restoration ecology. Mat is licensed by the FAA Part 107 to operate UAS’s.

In the past year, our UAS team, led by Mat, performed a building envelope inspection of the downtown Columbus iconic – ‘James Rhodes Tower’ – a 41 story, 690 foot skyscraper, the tallest building in Columbus and 5th tallest in Ohio. The success from this project led to another building envelope inspection of the historic and iconic building known as ‘Lincoln LeVeque Tower’ a 47 story Art Deco Style, 555.5 feet skyscraper which was the 5th tallest building in the world when completed. Among the other projects include an infrared roofing survey of the Greater Columbus Convention Center a 1.8 million square feet facility to identify water leakage and building envelope inspections of Capital University.
